Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Biohazard Cleanup?

When a home needs cleanup after a death, injury, or other traumatic event, families often have two immediate questions: Who can handle the work safely, and will insurance pay for it?

Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Biohazard Cleanup?

Homeowners insurance may cover some biohazard cleanup costs, but coverage is not automatic. The answer depends on what happened, the terms of your policy, and the insurance company’s review of the claim. Before assuming the work is covered—or that you must pay for everything yourself—contact your insurer.

What affects coverage?

The insurer will look at the cause of the damage, the parts of the home affected, your policy’s coverage and exclusions, and your deductible. It may also distinguish between cleaning contaminated areas, removing damaged materials, and repairing the property afterward.

Because policies and situations vary, a cleanup company cannot promise that an insurer will pay a claim. Your insurance agent or claims representative can explain how your policy applies.

What should you ask your insurance company?

When you call, describe what happened and ask:

  • Does my policy cover professional biohazard or trauma cleanup in this situation?

  • Does it cover the removal and replacement of affected flooring or other materials?

  • Are repairs handled under the same claim?

  • What is my deductible?

  • What photos, estimates, or records do you need?

  • Should I wait for an adjuster before work begins?

Write down your claim number and the name of the person you speak with. If the property needs prompt attention, tell the insurer and ask what steps you should take while the claim is being reviewed.
